Yum! started out as Tricon Global Restaurants, which was a subsidiary of PepsiCo until the spin-off in 1997. Tricon owned Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and KFC. It acquired seafood chain Long John Silver's and root beer chain A&W Restaurants in 2002.

The rights to the A&W brand (except in Canada) are owned by Keurig Dr Pepper , which in turn licenses the brand to the U.S.-based A&W Restaurant chain. A&W Root Beer products are distributed via various U.S. bottlers.

Pepsi has never owned A&W Restaurants. Pepsi owned Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut. In 1997 the restaurants were spun off as Tricon Global Restaurants. In 2002, Tricon bought the company that owned A&W restaurants and Long John Silvers, then changed its name to Yum!
